Phone Stand


Conception:
The original idea was simple: I didn't like my phone stand and wanted to explore what a beautiful phone stand could look like. Then I added an additional constraint for myself: I wanted a simple, elegant design, with aesthetic value, that served its function well, but I also wanted it to be simple to manufacture. My design process originally began as sketches, and after experimenting with 3D printing, transitioned to sheet metal for simplicity, clean lines, and rapid manufacturing.

My initial sketches were unrefined, focused on shape and functionality in mind. As I played with the phone’s center of gravity, my design evolved and I incorporated several considerations for 3D printing. These addressed restrictions of overhangs and supports to minimize post processing and material use. As I was debating how I would change the design for different manufacturing methods, particularly Injection Molding, I decided that the design could translate well into a simple sheet metal build. This reduced constraints on angles and geometric shapes, and provided simplicity and speed of manufacturing, while also providing the option to easily stack for shipping density should I ever want to commercialize it.
Transition To Sheet Metal and Final Product

In the process of iterating for optimized manufacturing ease, I considered a new design utilizing sheet metal at the base. I took a bird as my inspiration. This phone stand design ended up becoming the eventual product, which I loved for both its functional and aesthetic value. I designed several different possible options, including those found in the CAD screenshots below, but ultimately decided on the one to the right, as it would not require use of a water jet, leading to further ease of manufacturing. Its only requirements are basic shear, notching, and bending operations. This simple design is pleasing to look at and serves as my personal phone stand.
