I designed and built a 3-axis CNC cutter. I developed a custom G-code interpreter and a stepper-driven Cartesian motion system. I enjoyed furthering understanding of the underlying mechanics and programming for larger CNC machines.

Syringe Moving Device and Sharpie Lifter

This was a prototype project using lead screws and stepper motors for precise vertical motion, meant as a precursor to my 2D plotter, and eventually my 3D Cutter. I wanted to explore and gain a better understanding of how to design for assembly, and how the assemblies I build in CAD are reflected in reality.

Electromechanical Cart for DC Motor Control

I design this variable-distance cart with two friends. We used bang-bang control to transport an unstable vertical bar quickly without tipping. We entered this cart to compete in a speed and stability contest. Working on it allowed me to deeply understand DC motor control, and the complex trade-offs between balance and speed.

Phone Stand

I wanted to explore how I can incorporate aesthetic form as a complement to a design's function, through the process of making myself a phone stand. I explored some alternative designs with different manufacturing methods, but was delighted with how this minimalist aluminum stand turned out in my decor.

2D Plotter

Before beginning my 3D Cutter project, I wanted to more deeply understand stepper motors, lead screws, and automated motion via G-code. In the process, I found myself deeply intrigued by cartesian motion systems and worked through the challenges of driving my plotter design via both a joystick based manual control, and an alternative, precision-centered G-code program.

CNC Cutter Stepper Music

I wanted to explore how an issue I had with mechanical amplification in my 3D Cutter could be leveraged to play songs. I added functions to my custom G-code interpreter to parse frequency and duration based syntax, and wrote custom audio file analysis software to generate "g-code sheet music."

My Background

Hi there! I am currently a third-year undergraduate student at Boston University, pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in mathematics, and an additional concentration in manufacturing. I absolutely love exploring how engineering intersects with my other interests, which range from learning new design for manufacturing methods (I am currently working in Boston University's manufacturing facility helping others bring their ideas to life), exploring programming solutions to mechanical problems, and learning new mathematical concepts. In my free time, I love working on my personal design projects, such as improving my custom G-code interpreter, as well as making candy and learning circus arts!
